WCC Artistic Director Robert Gehrenbeck
is Director of Choral Activities at the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he conducts the UW-W Chamber
Singers, Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale, and opera and
musical theatre productions. He has founded and
conducted community-based choruses in Minnesota,
Illinois, and Indiana. During a period of study in
Leipzig, Germany, Gehrenbeck served as assistant
conductor of the Kantorei St. Nikolai and the
Friedenskantorei, performing with those ensembles in
Leipzig's St. Nicholas and St. Thomas churches. As a
singer, Gehrenbeck has appeared with the Robert Shaw
Festival Singers, New York State Baroque, Pittsburgh's
Bach and the Baroque, and the Bloomington Early Music
Festival. Dr.
Gehrenbeck earned degrees at Macalester College (B.A.),
Boston University (M.M.) and Indiana University (D.M.),
with additional studies at the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
Conservatory in Leipzig. Repertoire and research
interests include Baroque performance practice,
intersections between music and literature in German
Romantic music, Latin American music, and contemporary
choral music. His doctoral dissertation on contemporary
British composer Giles Swayne received the 2007 Julius
Herford Prize from the American Choral Directors
Association. Through Dr. Gehrenbeck's leadership, we
have been able
to present phenomenal master works with chamber
orchestra including Haydn's The Creation
in 2011 and J.S. Bach's St. John Passion
in 2010. In 2013 we will perform the exquisite
Mozart Requiem for two performances in both
Madison and Whitewater, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Chamber Chamber Choir
is pleased to welcome Bob for a fifth season as our
conductor.
